Sydney Swans FC 1st. win at Home - AFL Blog 2006

The Sydney Swans have won their first home match of the season, downing a disappointing Geelong by 22 points at Telstra Stadium on Saturday night.

The Swans, who had been beaten in their earlier two home matches at the SCG this year, gained the ascendancy in the second quarter and despite the Cats threatening to make

charges at different stages, were always in
control and went on to win
15.17 (107) to 13.7 (85).

Barry Hall booted four goals and starred for the Swans, while Adam Schneider, Jude Bolton and Michael O'Loughlin were also prominent for the winners.

Hall was giving Matthew Scarlett the slip and he had plenty of it in the first quarter as well as booting a goal.

But Geelong, with Gary Ablett and Paul Chapman looking creative, led by a goal at the first break.

A costly turnover from an out-of-sorts Scarlett - who was moved off Hall mid-way through the quarter - gave Goodes his first goal, and when Schneider and Craig Bolton booted late goals the Swans led by 20 points at half-time, 7.11 to 5.3.

Hall, who had three goals, and O'Loughlin could have put Geelong away before the last change but missed relatively easy chances, although the home side still led by 24 points at three-quarter time.

But Hall booted his fourth to spell the end for Geelong, and two more goals to Schneider and another to Goodes ensured the Sydneysiders celebrated their first win on home soil for the year.

SYDNEY: 3.3, 7.11, 11.16, 15.17 (107)
GEELONG: 4.3, 5.3, 9.4, 13.7 (85)

GOALS – Sydney: Schneider 4, Hall 4, C. Bolton 2, Goodes 2, J. Bolton, O'Keefe, O'Loughlin
BEST – Sydney: Schneider, Hall, O'Loughlin, O'Keefe, Williams, J. Bolton

The Sydney Swans Football Club - The Swans - AFL 2006

The Swans are struggling a little at the start of 2006 with just the one win thus far, after winning the 2005 Premiership, have they got a Premiership hangover, can they get it together and be a force in 2006? With Big Bad Bustling Barry Hall, Adam Goodes, Paul Williams in the mix they won't let the fans down and they tackle the winless Demons without Williams this weekend and should clock up win number two.

Let's see what they can do in 2006.

Go Swannies.
